Rarity: 9 I have seen this calendar twice on ebay: once with and once without the mailer. (x)

1979 Methuen

ISBN: 045-893700-2
VARIANT: "The 1979 Calendar of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings - A Film" Published in Canada. Illustrations from the “Lord of the Rings” animated movie by Ralph Bakshi. Dimensions: 13 x 12.25 inches (w x h); stapled; punched hanging hole; heavy-weight cardboard mailer. The mailer was not sealed as the US issues of Ballantine; it has a "slot and tab"-type closure.

Rarity: 8 With the original mailer: 10 It is not readily distinguished from the US Ballantine issue; one would have to ask the seller for the ISBN. Ratings based solely on eBay listings as it is a commercial issue and there should still be many "out there." (m)
1979 Methuen

ISBN: 0-458-93690-1
VARIANT: "The Silmarillion Desk Calendar 1979” Illustrations by Professor Tolkien (coloration by H.E. Riddett)(same illustrations as the 1978 A&U calendar). Distinguished from Ballantine issue above by ISBN and "Methuen" in upper right-hand corner. Dimensions: 6.5 x 9 inches (w x h); plastic comb-bound on side; cardboard cover.

Rarity: 9 Has appeared on eBay only once (that I know of). As a commercial issue, there should be more out there. (x)
1981 Methuen Publications (Agincourt, ON, Canada)

ISBN: 458 946109
VARIANT: “The 1981 J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar – The Lord of the Rings - To Honor the Silver Anniversary” Illustrations by Paul Rivoche loosely based on images from the Ralph Bakshi film. Dimensions: 13 x 11.75 inches (w x h); stapled; punched hanging hole; glossy white, medium-weight paperboard sleeve; shrink-wrapped (Technically, it's not a flexible, plastic shrinkwrap. The wrap is cellophane-like and rather brittle. It is therefore difficult to find one still in the wrap because of its age and the fact that the cellophane splits because of its brittleness).

Rarity: 8 Shrinkwrapped: 10 May appear on ebay only once or twice a year; usually in the original sleeve. One must confirm the ISBN to distinguish it from the Tolkien Enterprises issue (see entry below). (x,m)

ISBN: 9 780044 406778
VARIANT: "The Tolkien Calendar 1991" Same as the 0-04-440677-0 issue, but shrinkwrapped. As it has no mailer/envelope and reports the same 13-digit ISBN as the UK issue, the only way to distinguish between the two is "$11.95" (the price) which is found just to the left of the barcode on the back cover of the calendar. Dimensions: 13.5 x 15 inches (w x h); wire bound; heavy wire hanging loop;shrinkwrapped.
